Introduction

The USS Arizona Memorial was built to commemorate the American soldiers who died in the Pearl Harbor attack. Completed in 1980 with joint funding from the US government and private donors, the memorial is an arched bridge spanning 184 feet over the submerged USS Arizona battleship. The structure is made of reinforced concrete and steel built on underwater fill, with a white exterior. The memorial stands next to a white marble wall engraved with the names of 1,177 Navy soldiers who died on the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941. However, as the number of visitors has increased over the years, the site has experienced sinking of the structure due to the demand. The building has sunk nearly 76 centimeters. It has been reported that the surge in visitors is partly due to Hollywood's release of several World War II-themed movies, including "Pearl Harbor." Visitors can take a boat tour to the memorial from the visitor center, which takes a total of 75 minutes.
