Introduction

The San Gimignano Cathedral, also known as the Church of the Assumption of Mary, is one of the largest churches in the ancient city and was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. The museum inside the church displays many works of the Sienese School from the medieval and Renaissance periods, including the famous "Madonna and Child" by Pier Dandini. The church is located on a hillside in front, so there is a high staircase leading up to it, with the Piazza del Duomo below, adjacent to the Piazza della Cisterna, and at the crossroads of the main east-west and north-south roads.
