Introduction
The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces are located approximately 40 kilometers long from the West of the Chateau de Chillon to the East of the outskirts of Lausanne. The earliest vineyards were established in the 11th century by monks who built grape terraces with stone walls. Nowadays, it is one of the largest vineyard areas in Switzerland and is scattered with 14 villages that witnessed social changes and the balance between humans and nature over the past thousand years. In 2007, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The best seasons to visit are summer and autumn. There are many hiking routes to choose from within the terraces, and if you prefer not to walk, you can take a sightseeing rubber wheel train instead. The St-Saphorin-Lutry route, recommended by the Swiss Tourism Bureau, is 11 kilometers long and takes about 3 and a half hours. Along the way, you can also visit traditional wineries and taste the local wine. If you have more time, you can choose any route you want, but be sure to keep an eye on the last train time.
The tourist information centers in Montreux and Vevey can provide more detailed information. The hiking map can be found on the Hike Switzerland website, and the official tourism bureau websites for Montreux, Vevey, and Lavaux also offer recommendations for hiking routes. No matter which way you choose, the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces will provide you with an unforgettable experience. Address Chemin de Fény, Puidoux, Lavaux Oron District, Vaud, 1070, Switzerland
