Place des Nations, 1202 Geneva, Switzerland
4.1

Introduction

A tall chair stands in front of the United Nations headquarters in the shape of a symbol for the great threat that landmines pose to humanity. This is the emblem of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, founded in 1992, and a major advocate for the International Mine Ban Treaty. In 1997, the Campaign and its spokesperson received the Nobel Peace Prize. According to a UNESCO report, there are currently about 110 million active landmines spread across more than 70 countries worldwide. Every month, 800 people die and thousands are injured or disabled due to landmine explosions.
