Introduction

Jeju Mokgwangyag is the government office of local officials during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was already an established government institution during the Tamna Dynasty. However, the existing government facilities were destroyed by fire in 1434. To rebuild the office, construction began the following year on the site we see today. Throughout the Joseon Dynasty, the buildings of Jeju Mokgwangyag were well-maintained and preserved. However, during the period of Japanese invasion from 1910-1945, all the facilities were destroyed. In the 1990s, with funding from the Jeju Island government, four excavation projects were conducted in an attempt to reconstruct Jeju Mokgwangyag to the greatest extent possible. During the excavation, numerous historical artifacts dating back to the Tamna period were discovered, providing valuable information on the scale and layout of the ancient Jeju Mokgwangyag. Based on this information and historical records, the site was reconstructed between 1999 and 2002.
