Introduction
Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, Western Cape Province, South Africa, is the first military base established by Europeans in South Africa, with its construction spanning from 1666 to 1697. It is also one of the oldest European-style buildings in South Africa. Originally, the castle was the residence of the Governor-General of the Dutch East India Company, and today it serves as both the William Fehr Art Collection and military museum. The prison cells where prisoners were once held are still preserved here. The original site of Castle of Good Hope was on the coast of Table Mountain, but the land was reclaimed and it was moved to its current location.
