Introduction

Cape Agulhas, derived from the compass needle, is the name of this place. It is because here, navigators discovered that the compass needle points true north, thus determining the southernmost point of the African continent. Today, this quiet town still retains its historical traces, with its two-story houses scattered among the trees, and only one street leading to the lighthouse. It is the existence of Cape Agulhas that attracts many tourists to come here, and thus local hotels and souvenir shops have developed. It is worth mentioning that the Agulhas Lighthouse is built on the highest point of the town. To enjoy the beautiful scenery from the tower, one not only needs to climb the long 90-degree staircase but also faces the constant strong winds. However, the visual impact and satisfaction that come from enduring these difficulties are indescribable. The only marker here is a bronze plaque that reads "This is the southernmost point of the African continent, the boundary between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans" in English, Portuguese, and South African languages, reminding visitors of this place's special status. In addition, the plaque also has the latitude and longitude and the names of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, for visitors to take photos and commemorate.
