Introduction

An unmatched palace built with ransom funds, the Bahia Palace (Arabic: قصر البديع‎) was inspired by the design of the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The palace originally had 360 rooms, a courtyard measuring 135 meters by 110 meters, and a swimming pool measuring 90 meters by 20 meters. It was adorned with luxurious decorations made of marble and gold imported from Sudan. The palace also had a small tunnel-like prison for imprisoning the king's prisoners. Construction of the Bahia Palace took 25 years, with a portion of it demolished by Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail to construct his own palace in Meknes. Currently, extensive restoration work is underway at the Bahia Palace, including the reconstruction of palace walls and the swimming pool.
