Introduction
Lake Naivasha, located in the eastern African country of Kenya, is a freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley region. The lake covers an area of approximately 139 square kilometers and is surrounded by a 64 square kilometer swamp. With an altitude of 1,884 meters, the lake has an average depth of 6 meters. Lake Naivasha is home to hippos and over 400 species of birds. Its name comes from the local Maasai word "Nai'posha," meaning "rough water," as the lake can experience significant fluctuations in water levels during storms. The lake's size varies depending on rainfall, ranging from approximately 160 square kilometers. Situated at an altitude of 1,890 meters, the lake provides a habitat for nearly 400 bird species, including the African flamingo. From 1937 to 1950, Lake Naivasha served as a docking point for steamers connecting the Kenyan capital Nairobi and Kisumu, used to transport passengers and mail between Britain and South Africa. Renowned writer Joy Adamson resided here and wrote the popular book "Born Free."
