Introduction
Yunmen Temple is located in the north of Ruyuan County in Shaoguan, about 50 kilometers away from downtown. Established in 923 AD, it is the birthplace of the Yunmen sect founded by Wenyan Chan Master, the seventh generation disciple of Master Huineng, one of the five major Zen schools. By the early 20th century, the temple had fallen into disrepair. In winter 1943, Master Yunmen presided over the nine-year reconstruction effort, which required significant manpower and resources. Today, the temple has 180 halls and more than 80 new statues, once again shining with the glory of the Yunmen sect. It has been designated as a key national temple along with Nanhua Temple. The temple also features the Memorial Hall of Master Yunmen and a pagoda containing Buddhist relics, while the famous Guihua Lake Scenic Area lies behind the mountain. The surrounding mountains and waters, including Guanyin Mountain, Guihua Lake Scenic Area, Guihua Tide, Chumi Stone, Jiuxian Rock, Cibeifeng, and Tiegu Mountain, attract many tourists. Dozens of halls and houses around Haihui Pagoda serve as a place for female practitioners. Important stone tablets, such as the "Real Nature Stele of Master Kuangzhen of the Guangtai Chan Temple in Han Shaozhou in the Great Bao Yuan of the Southern Han Dynasty (958)", are also valuable Buddhist cultural relics and worth visiting.
