Introduction

During the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era, five descendants of the Cai family opened five food shops along the official road at the foot of Qingyang Mountain, in order to serve travelers passing through. Their shops were marked with wine flags, and the aroma of food filled the air, gradually building their reputation as the "Qingyang Cai, Five Shops Market". As a result, Five Shops Market became an alternative name for Qingyang. With the continuous development of society and economic prosperity, Five Shops Market became a bustling district during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with shops lining the streets and bustling traffic, with beautiful red brick residences. This district encompasses a variety of architectures, including ancestral shrines, temples, residential homes, and shops. It has preserved 81 typical residential buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Republic of China, and modern times, of which six are protected cultural relics representing the unique architectural style of Jinjiang. It includes rammed earth houses, traditional "palace start" red brick buildings from southern Fujian, as well as Western-style buildings. While preserving and passing on their cultural heritage, they have also inherited the intangible cultural heritage and characteristic customs of the southern Fujian region.
