Introduction

The Wanping City is the only well-preserved two-door guard city in North China. It was built under the supervision of the eunuch Wu Jun from the Imperial Stable Department of the Ming Dynasty from 1638 to 1640. It has an eastern and a western gate, named "Shunzhi Gate" and "Weiyuan Gate," respectively. The city wall is 640 meters long and 320 meters wide, with a total area of about 20 hectares. Despite being bombarded by the invading Japanese troops, Wanping City still has bullet holes, but other buildings have been repaired and rebuilt. It was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council in 1961, and the city wall and east-west city gate were repaired with special funds from the government in 1984. It was officially opened to tourists in 1987. In the late 20th century, the Beijing Municipal Government decided to restore Wanping City to its original appearance during the Ming and Qing dynasties, including restoring the asphalt streets to the original blue stone surface.
