The original Purple Mountain Pass had four gates: East, West, South, and North. The South Gate was called "South Heavenly Gate" and had an inscription on the lintel that read "The First Mighty Pass in Southern Frontier". It no longer exists. The North Gate, known as "River and Mountain Gate", is well-preserved with a two-layer inscription on the lintel.
