Introduction

Located on a steep cliff wall surrounded by green vegetation, Maiji Mountain is one of the main attractions of the scenic area and one of the most famous grottoes in Northwest China. Visitors can climb up the wooden walkway built along the mountain to visit grottoes of various sizes. These grottoes preserve a large amount of religious art materials and record the development and evolution of Chinese clay sculpture art. They provide rich historical materials for later generations to study Buddhist culture. The statues on Maiji Mountain are huge, with a height of up to 16 meters and a minimum of only about 10 centimeters. Among them, the flying heavenly maiden is an incredibly beautiful figure, without wings or feathers, but able to soar in the air adorned by clouds. The artists condensed her beauty in the flowing dress and dancing ribbons, making her one of the most outstanding creations of ancient Chinese artists.
