Introduction

In ancient times, Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County was part of the Puli Kingdom in the Western Regions of China during the Han Dynasty. As borders changed during the Northern Wei to Sui Dynasties, it gradually became the territory of the Hepantuo Kingdom. During the Tang Dynasty, it was divided into the Congling Garrison of Shule Town. In the Song to Yuan Dynasties, it was classified as a part of the Hetian region. In the Ming Dynasty, it became the territory of the Yarkant Khanate. Until the Qing Dynasty, Puli was established as a border defense hall in the 28th year of Guangxu's reign and was under the jurisdiction of Shache Prefecture. After the establishment of Puli County in 1913, it came under the jurisdiction of the Kashgar Administrative Region. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County was established in March 1950 and was under the jurisdiction of the Kashgar Administrative Office. Later on September 17, 1954, it was classified as the South Xinjiang Administrative Office. In 1956, the autonomous county was transferred to Kashgar Administrative Region, and after the Cultural Revolution, it was governed by the Kashgar Administrative Office. Today, Tashkurgan is a vast and beautiful autonomous county with a long history, splendid culture, distinctive ethnic characteristics, and many cultural relics and historical sites.
