Introduction

The Pamir Plateau is a region located in the southeastern part of Central Asia, spanning Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan. Its name comes from the Tajik language, meaning "roof of the world," with elevations ranging from 4000 to 7700 meters, boasting numerous peaks and mountain ranges. During the Han Dynasty, it was already known as the "Onion Range," due to the abundance of onion plants and green cliffs. This area has also been called the "Roof of Eurasia" as both southern and central routes of the ancient Silk Road traversed through here, leading to West Asia, South Asia, and other parts of Europe. The Pamir Plateau is divided into eastern and western regions. The terrain in the east is more spacious and flat, consisting of two northwest to southeast mountain ranges and some river valleys and basins. In contrast, the western part is composed of several roughly parallel northeast to southwest mountain ranges and gorges, characterized by high altitude differences and featuring high mountains and deep valleys. If one wishes to visit the Pamir Plateau, the main destination is the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County located in the northeast, as well as some attractions such as the Muztagh Ata Peak, the Stone Fortress, and the Sino-Pakistan border known as the Red Pamir. The Stone Fortress is a ruinous ancient city located north of the autonomous county, with precipitous terrain and an elevation of approximately 3100 meters. The Muztagh Ata Peak is one of the most beautiful scenic spots on the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, covered with snow year-round, and is one of the most sought-after peaks for mountain climbing enthusiasts. The Red Pamir border crossing is the only land crossing between China and Pakistan and an important gateway to South Asia and Europe. Here you can find the famous China-Pakistan border marker No. 7 and a spectacular national gate.
