Qikou Ancient Town, A Living Town with Ancient Prosperity

The once most prosperous ancient town on the Yellow River waterway
4.9

Introduction

During the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods, Qikou Ancient Town was an important military stronghold. However, thanks to the Yellow River water transport system, this ancient town became a famous commercial center in northern China. Its geographical location is extremely advantageous, connecting Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia to the west, and Beijing, Tianjin, and Taiyuan to the east, making it a hub for east-west economy and culture, and earning it the nickname "the first town of the Yellow River's nine bends." Today, this ancient town still preserves a large number of exquisite buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including warehouses, exchange shops, pawnshops and other commercial buildings, as well as temples, residences, docks, and almost all types of feudal commercial towns. Because the residents still maintain an old and simple way of life, Qikou Ancient Town is also known as the "living ancient town."
