Introduction
In October 1951, the Guanting Reservoir began construction at the border between Huailai County in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province and Yanqing County in Beijing. It was completed in May 1954 and was the first large reservoir built after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It relied mainly on the Yongding River in Huailai County, Hebei Province for operation for over 40 years, making great contributions to flood control, irrigation and power generation. The Guanting Reservoir was also once a major source of water for Beijing. However, in the late 1980s, the water quality in the reservoir was severely polluted and deteriorated further in the 1990s, leading to the cessation of the supply of drinking water to urban residents in 1997.
