Introduction

Kaiyuan Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Province and an important cultural relic along the southeastern coast of China. The scripture pavilion houses cultural relics from the Tang Dynasty to the Republican era, including 32 Buddha statues, bodhisattvas, arhats, Heavenly Kings, and famous calligraphic works by Zhang Ruitu and Hong Yi. Kaiyuan Temple is also one of three temples in China that still maintains a "jiezhuang," or precepts hall, along with the Jiezhong Temple in Beijing and the Zhaoqing Temple in Zhejiang Province. Every March, the road leading to the Western Pagoda is lined with pale and rosy pink cherry blossoms, which complement the pagoda's beauty remarkably well.
