Introduction

Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City is located in the western part of Zhoucun City, and is a historically significant commercial center. In 2001, it was listed as a provincial-level important tourism development project. The streets within the market intersect vertically and horizontally, the shops are well-ordered, and the architecture style is diverse. It has been evaluated by the Chinese Ancient Architecture Protection Committee as "the most representative ancient commercial architecture group surviving in China," and has high tourism value. To the south of the market, there are the site of the Shandong Anti-Yuan and Protect the Country Army Command and the Kuixing Pavilion Temple, while to the north there are the Mingjiao Temple, Qianfo Ge and Hui Long Bridge, making this an important site that combines nature and culture in Zhoucun. The main street of the market is called Dajie, which is one of the largest and oldest commercial streets in Zhoucun. It was built during the Yongle period of Ming Dynasty (around 1410 A.D.). By the ninth year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1636 A.D.), the basic form of Dajie had been established. Dajie runs from the intersection of Sishi Street and Yinzishi Street in the south to Shuoyimen in the north, with a total length of about two kilometers. It is divided into two parts by Beiji Pavilion in the middle, and only the southern section with a length of 400 meters is preserved now. In the late Qing Dynasty, the "Eight Great Auspicious Marks" of the Meng family in the old army of Zhangqiu traded here, attracting numerous wealthy merchants. Dajie became the business center of the cloth and miscellaneous goods industry. After Zhoucun became a commercial port in the 30th year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1904 A.D.), the scope of business and trade further expanded. Merchants from nearby cities such as Qingdao and Jinan, as well as from far-off cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, prospered in Dajie. The prosperity of Dajie's commerce was legendary, and it was said that "although Dajie is not wide, one could earn a lot of money every day."
