The most recommended popular glaciers in New Zealand

Witnessing those huge glacier valleys that extend almost to the sea level beneath the snowline with your own eyes, time appears to be "frozen" in the Ice Age in this place.

Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier was first discovered in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. From the glacier car park, you can hike to the viewing area to see the spectacular glacier. There are also many accommodation and dining options available.

Tasman Glacier

Tasman Glacier is located in the Aoraki/Mount Cook Mackenzie region, with a total length of 27 kilometers and a depth of 600 meters, making it the longest glacier in New Zealand. Tasman Glacier is currently rapidly deteriorating, not only melting but also disintegrating, causing icebergs of various shapes and sizes to fall into the ice lake, which will reach its maximum size in 19 years.

Fox Glacier

Not far from the center of the glacier town, there are glowworm caves where you can find nice cafes and restaurants. The beautiful Lake Matheson is near Fox Glacier, and it is one of the most scenic lakes in New Zealand (on clear days, you can see the reflection of Mount Cook in it).
