I rent from Europcar, and I asked specifically when picking up and the answer was that it was not necessary. If you don't go off-road and it doesn't rain too much, it won't get too dirty as long as you don't make the interior dirty. Not all gas stations have automatic car washes, but most have a bucket and brush for you to clean the windscreen yourself.
