Can you tell me how parking fees are calculated in New Zealand ?

Pay attention to the parking signs. Basically, there's no charge. We only paid for parking once during the entire New Zealand trip, and after paying, we walked 50 meters and saw a very empty free parking lot. The car didn't move at all during our stay in Auckland, and we parked it in the hotel.
If you are in the South Island / including Christchurch and Dunedin, there is almost no parking fee anywhere else... the only exception is Queenstown. When it comes to dinner time, parking spaces in Queenstown become very hard to find. I suggest you scout around before it gets dark; you can park for an hour on the roadside, just like parking next to the sidewalk. Every street will have a metal parking meter. Insert a credit card and follow the instructions. When it shows that you need to pull it out and reinsert it with the magnetic strip facing the back, do so. The parking fee for one hour is 4.5 New Zealand dollars.
There is free parking , if the sign has 15 or 60 it means you can park for free for 15 minutes or 1 hour, if overcharged you have to pay, and the charge is based on the length of time you park. You can try to park for free
