It shouldn't be cold in early September, I think it's fine. I didn't go ice-skating in Queenstown in early July either. I was driving a "weaker front-wheel drive small broken car" Yaris, and it wasn't on a gravel road, nor did I drive up the mountain to ski. If you're really worried, you can rent a Rav4-level 4WD?
