I rent from North Island with basic insurance, and full insurance from South Island. My experience is, it's better to go with basic insurance. Out of the blue, I went out for a meal and when I came back, the front windshield was cracked by a stone. All I had to do was report it to the rental company, sign a form, and leave everything to the basic insurance. I didn't have to worry about anything. If it was full insurance, I would have had to pay upfront and then deal with the reimbursement when I got back to my country, which would have been quite a hassle.
