The Milford Sound can be reached by boat from Manapouri. You can stay overnight in Te Anau. Even if you buy the ticket for the 10 o'clock departure, it's a long way to go and it's very tiring. Road trip in the South Island is too rushed to enjoy the scenery, which is not very worthwhile. In my opinion, or you can consider the overnight cruise in the Milford Sound.
