It's doable in one day, but it's really tiring. We had to leave very early and it was already dark when we came back. I suggest staying in Te Anau and starting from there. It'll be much easier. I realized that later and regretted it, but the hotel was booked in Queenstown and we couldn't cancel it, so we had no choice!
