I will be renting a car for Road trip in Salzburg, and will be crossing the border to Germany on the way, then returning to Austria. Do I need to buy a transit ticket ?

It's best to inform the car rental company about the toll fees in advance, otherwise there may be issues with insurance coverage.
Don't need to buy, I picked up the car in Salzburg last year, went through the lake district, and arrived at the Swan Castle. But when picking up the car, I have to inform the crossing of Germany.
No, the so-called transit fee is not a toll, it is mainly an insurance issue. There is no problem going to Germany, no transit fee is charged. When going to Eastern Europe, some car rental companies may think that there is a possibility of lack of safety in their own country, so you may need to fill in some forms when renting a car. Also, there is no toll on German highways.
