I went to the Italian embassy to get the driver's license translation certified because the Italian authorities do not recognize notarized English translations, only their own embassy's certification. Although a regular translation is enough when picking up the car, it won't work if you encounter the police. The chances of the police checking are very small, unless there is an accident. The certification process takes a week, and I submitted it last Thursday, so I can pick it up this Thursday.
