Introduction

The official name of the Tower of London is "Her Majesty's Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London". It was the last palace inhabited by James I several centuries ago. It has been used as a fortress, arsenal, treasury, mint, palace, execution site, public records office, observatory, shelter, and prison, and is famous for housing prisoners from the upper classes. Elizabeth I was imprisoned here during Mary I's reign. The last prisoner was Rudolf Hess during World War II. In 1988, it was designated as a World Heritage Site. In 2012, a Crown Jewels exhibition was held to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
