Introduction
Lake Mashu is a lake located in the eastern part of Akan National Park in Hokkaido. It covers an area of 19.6 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 212 meters and an elevation of 351 meters. It is known to be one of the clearest volcanic crater lakes in the world, and is renowned for its high transparency. With a circumference of about 20 kilometers, it lies at the foot of Mount Mashu, which rises to a height of 858 meters in the southeast. The lake is often shrouded in mist, making it a rare sight to see its contours on a clear day. It is considered a sacred lake by the locals and is referred to as "kamuitou" in the Ainu language, meaning "mysterious lake." Transportation After getting off at JR Mohe station, transfer to the final stop of the Akan bus towards the direction of the first observation deck of Lake Mashu, and then walk a short distance to reach it.
