Introduction

One of Valletta's city gardens is the Lower Barrakka Gardens, featuring a Romanesque marble temple as its main attraction due to its lower elevation. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are located above the Grand Harbour, accessible through the free Barrakka Lift. It is an ideal place to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the three cities. Below the upper garden is the St. Peter and St. Paul's Fortification area, which features a row of 11 saluting cannons (Saluting Battery) mainly used for timekeeping since the 16th century until 1960. The cannons are fired at sunrise and sunset every day to represent the opening and closing of work hours and city gates. Currently, there is also a cannon firing performance every day at noon, with guided tours available from 11 am to 12:15 pm for visitors.
