Traveling in Taiwan with Taiwanese Dramas: 15 Popular Filming Locations to Visit

Whether it's "Cape No. 7," "You Are the Apple of My Eye," or "Our Times," the restlessness, ambiguity, and innocence of youth depicted in these movies always bring back memories of our own youthful days. The captivating scenery in these films also touches the hearts of audiences. So, let's follow in the footsteps of these Taiwanese dramas and revisit the landscapes that the main characters have walked through.

Eslite Dunnan Store

Eslite Bookstore has become one of the representative elements of Taipei's culture. It embodies a certain character of Taiwan and is a gathering place for many literary youth. In the movie 'Au Revoir Taipei', the store clerk Susie (played by Amber Kuo) and the customer Kai (played by Joseph Chang), who studies French in the bookstore every day, develop feelings for each other and spend an absurd yet romantic night together. The filming location of the movie is the first Eslite bookstore, the Dunnan Store. Eslite Bookstore is open 24 hours a day. If you are a literary youth, you can take your favorite book and find a small space here to enjoy a unique Taipei nightlife.

Yangmingshan National Park

The beauty of Yangmingshan lies in its pure nature. There are no pavilions, bridges, or flowing streams, only a sea of flowers in spring and diverse volcanic landscapes, hot springs, waterfalls, and fault lines. Various wild animals stroll in front of you, and cute little squirrels scurry at your feet. The youth film 'Our Times,' which took the Taiwanese film market by storm in 2015, features a camping scene with Xu Taiyu and Lin Zhenxin and their friends at Yangmingshan after their school celebration.

Tamsui District

Many people know Tamsui Town because of Jay Chou's directed movie 'Secret'. This movie swept the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards that year, and Gui Lunmei became the campus goddess in the hearts of countless teenagers because of this movie. Jay Chou also captured the hearts of thousands of girls with a brilliant piano performance. The romantic first love story of Lu Xiaoyu and Ye Xianglun unfolds in Tamsui Town, with Tamkang University and Tamsui High School being some of the filming locations. In the movie, both schools exude a strong classical atmosphere, and Tamsui High School is also Jay Chou's alma mater.
'You Are the Apple of My Eye' threw a pink bomb to the public, evoking the pure and innocent feelings of our school days and bringing back memories of our youthful laughter and tears. In the story of Shen Jiayi and Ke Jingteng, the most romantic scene is the release of sky lanterns at Shifen Station. The small train with colorful paintings passes through the old street, flanked by various snack shops, presenting a leisurely small town scene.

Jingcheng High School

The story of Shen Jiayi and Ke Jingteng during their student years took place at Jingcheng High School. The school is not large; upon entering, you can see the playground and the command platform, as well as the familiar Class 8 of Grade 3. The school is open to the public on weekends and after 4 PM every day. Nearby, there are shops that customize Jingcheng High School uniforms, allowing you to wear the uniform and relive the movie scenes, exploring the footprints of the main characters.
This alley, which sounds inappropriate for children, has a history of over 200 years and was originally used for fire prevention. Since the alley is only 70 centimeters wide, two people meeting can only pass by turning sideways, hence it is humorously called 'Touch Breast Alley'.
Located next to Feng Chia University in Taichung, Fengjia Night Market is the birthplace of Taiwanese night market snacks. You can find night market snacks from any part of Taiwan here. From sausage wrapped in glutinous rice, Minglun egg pancakes, Huangjinzei octopus rice balls, Nichuan takoyaki, to boba milk tea... The night market spans several streets, filled with a dazzling array of food stalls. You might need a stomach with superpowers to fully enjoy it.
Pier-2 Art Center is the largest cultural and creative park in Kaohsiung City, located right next to Kaohsiung Port. It was transformed from a former pier. The films 'Black & White' and 'Exit No. 6' were both filmed here. Pier-2 also hosts a series of events such as the Kaohsiung Design Festival and the Han Character Festival. Additionally, there are independent music concerts every weekend. Listening to a concert in the huge warehouse is a unique experience. Few tour groups come here, so you can quietly enjoy your artistic time.

Xiziwan

The sunset at Xiziwan is one of the eight major scenic spots in Kaohsiung. Mayday once filmed a promotional short film for Kaohsiung called 'Kaohsiung Wonderland' at Xiziwan. The most beautiful moment of the sunset is shortly after the sun has set, when the sky is not completely dark yet, and the entire sky is dyed pink by the afterglow of the sunset. The entire Kaohsiung Harbor looks particularly dreamy against the pink sky. Walking along the long breakwater, facing the gentle sea breeze, is beautiful and romantic.

Formosa Boulevard Station

The Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station is currently the world's largest glass mosaic artwork. The station's ceiling is entirely made of stained glass, creating a fairy-tale-like world of vibrant colors. This location also appears in a music video by the band Mayday, attracting many fans to visit and take photos. Additionally, the Dome of Light can only be seen after exiting the station.
Kenting has many typical Minnan-style houses inhabited by indigenous people. One of these century-old houses was chosen for the film 'Cape No. 7'. The owner's son is named Zhang Gengjia, so the male protagonist in the movie was named Ajia. After the movie became popular, Hengchun Post Office received over 8,000 letters addressed to 'No. 7, Cape, Hengchun County'. Since the letters could not be delivered, the post office stamped each letter with a special 'Cape Commemorative Stamp' and sent them back. Therefore, when you visit Hengchun, don't forget to go to the post office and get this stamp. Additionally, next to Ajia's home, there is a grocery store named 'Cape No. 8'.
This is the largest fishing port in Kenting National Park. The shallow waters along the coast are filled with coral reefs, making it perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts. For those who prefer more thrilling activities, options like speedboats and banana boats are available. If you are traveling with children or elderly people, the semi-submarine tours at Houbi Lake offer an easy way to view the underwater scenery. The Houbi Lake seafood market is famous for its salmon, which is sweet and fatty, and offers a variety of ways to enjoy it. Continuing south, you will encounter Taiwan's largest lighthouse, the Eluanbi Lighthouse. The azure waters along the coast reflect the white tower, making it one of the famous Eight Views of Hengchun.

Kenting Baisha Bay

If you have watched 'Life of Pi', you must be amazed by the beautiful floating island and the Mexican beach in the movie. All these scenes were filmed at Baisha Bay. The beach is composed of marine organism shells, making it particularly soft, skin-friendly, and bright. Whether it's beach barbecuing, camping, swimming, or diving, it's an excellent experience. The entire beach is filled with a pristine atmosphere, making it the best place in Kenting to get close to nature.

Qingshui Cliff on Suhua Highway

Some say that if you haven't been to Qingshui Cliff, you haven't truly been to Hualien. This is the world's second-largest cliff, with one side being a kilometer-high mountain plunging straight into the Pacific Ocean at a 90° angle, and the other side being a distinctly layered azure sea. It is the most beautiful and perilous section of the Suhua Highway. In the movie 'On the Road,' the three main characters meet on the Suhua Highway and form an unbreakable bond of fate. The Suhua Highway is now used exclusively for freight transport and is not open to passenger vehicles. You can only get there by riding a motorcycle or hiring a car. However, this also means that there are relatively fewer tourists on the Suhua Highway, allowing you to take as many photos as you like and capture yourself in the most beautiful scenery.

Qixingtan

At the end of 'Eternal Summer', the three main characters reveal their true feelings to each other at Qixingtan, bidding farewell to their sorrowful past. The entire movie has a gloomy tone, and even the scenery is grayish. However, in reality, Qixingtan is the best place near Hualien for wave-treading and stone-picking. The 20-plus kilometer coastline is entirely made up of pebbles, which have been smoothed by the sea, making them comfortable to walk on even barefoot. The sea here has varying shades of blue, appearing exceptionally clear under the sunlight. You can choose to cycle along the coast, where the waves crashing against the stones create lovely white foam, earning Qixingtan the nickname 'Foam Beach'. A special reminder: to protect this beach, taking the pebbles is not allowed.
