In 1849, the National Museum of Singapore was officially opened, and it remains one of the oldest museums in Singapore to this day. The design of the Merlion is inspired by a legend in the Malay Annals. In the 11th century, a prince named Sang Nila Utama saw a lion while patrolling Singapura.
