Introduction

From 1688 to 1711, the master architect Vauban built the Citadel of Besancon for King Louis XIV of France. This towering and unique fortress has a great military value. Along with other 11 fortresses, the Citadel of Besancon is one of the representative works of the World Heritage Site "Vauban's Fortifications".
