Introduction

Saksaywaman is an Inca site located in the north of the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, and is considered one of the largest and most spectacular ruins outside of Machu Picchu. Though its name is long, its pronunciation is quite close to the English words "Sexy Woman," making it easy to remember. This impressive stone complex overlooks the city of Cusco, and the surviving large stones are the largest seen by historians in Cusco and its surrounding areas, weighing around 300 tons. Using expert stone-cutting techniques, the Inca people shaped the large stones and joined them together without using any steel or cement. Saksaywaman was well-preserved during several major earthquakes in the past. Spanish colonizers once removed many of the large stones to build churches, leaving only around 20% of the original complex intact. Historians speculate that Saksaywaman was once a royal sanctuary, or possibly a fortress. Today, Saksaywaman is a must-see destination for travelers to Cusco, and hosts the annual Inti Raymi celebration. Behind the stone mountain, there is a natural stone slide that visitors can enjoy like a playground slide.
