Introduction
The Government Palace of Lima, located on the northern side of the Weapon Square, was built on the site of a large indigenous graveyard. Originally constructed in 1535 as the Governor's Mansion for the Viceroy Francisco Pizarro, it soon became the headquarters of the Peruvian government. The current building was renovated in 1937 using French Neoclassical architecture. On July 28, 1821, Jose de San Martin declared Peru's independence from the Government Palace.
