Introduction

Fallingwater, also known as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence, is a private house located in the southwestern Pennsylvania town of Stewart Township, Fayette County. Designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1934, the house sits above a waterfall on the Bear Run stream and serves as a peaceful retreat from city life. It was praised by TIME magazine for its remarkable design and beautiful natural setting, and was listed by Smithsonian Magazine as one of 28 places to visit in a lifetime. In 1963, the house was donated to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and opened as a museum to the public. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996 and has been recognized as one of the greatest works of American architecture by the American Institute of Architects. Fallingwater continues to be a popular destination for those interested in visiting a world-renowned architectural masterpiece.
