Introduction
Stone Mountain State Park, also known as Georgia Stone Mountain Park, is only a 30-minute drive from Atlanta. During the American Civil War, Atlanta was a strategic stronghold for the Southern army, so many tourist attractions in the area are related to the war. Stone Mountain State Park is one of the most famous, with an area of 3,200 acres. The most well-known attraction is the 825-foot, 583-acre granite mountain in the shape of a dome. Carved on the side of the mountain are reliefs of leaders of the Southern Confederacy during the Civil War, like Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. The reliefs, which measure 90 feet in height, 190 feet in width, and 400 feet in length, are globally recognized as the "largest and most stunning rock carving" in the world.
Aside from the reliefs, the park has many other attractions worth visiting. Visitors can check out the wild animal preserve and pre-Civil War plantation in their natural environment, ride on a narrow-gauge train modeled after the old-style machines from the Civil War period, or take a tour the lake on a steam-powered paddleboat. In addition, the park has entertainment facilities like aerial trams, historical museums, flea markets, golf courses, roller rinks, music centers and outdoor theaters. Visitors may need to wait for a while before they can see the mountain when they arrive at the park for the first time, but the wait is definitely worth it.
