Introduction

The Bay Bridge, locally known as Bay Bridge, is one of the largest bridges connecting San Francisco, Yerba Buena Island, and Oakland. It is also part of Interstate 80 and sees about 270,000 cars passing through it every day. The bridge is divided into two sections, with the West Bridge being a suspension bridge consisting of four towers that connects Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco, and the East Bridge, which spans between Yerba Buena Island and Oakland, is a cantilever bridge. The Bay Bridge also allows pedestrian and bike traffic through the bike lane on the new East Bridge. In addition, there are 18 toll lanes at the Oakland toll plaza, with six FasTrak electronic toll collection lanes, and two bus-only lanes for direct access to the bridge. During the morning rush hour, Oakland's traffic can be eased by using the highway's off-ramps. Congestion in the eastbound direction of the Bay Bridge during the evening rush hour is common. If driving, cars can be parked for free for up to three hours at the Burma Rd and Maritime St parking lot in Oakland.
