Introduction

New York City Hall is a historically significant building that has served government functions since its construction began in 1803 and was completed in 1812. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of America's national historic landmarks. Its grand rotunda has become an iconic symbol of the city, and its French-style dome is breathtakingly beautiful, reminiscent of an ancient Roman temple. While initially designed as the governor's office, the space has now been transformed into a museum displaying portraits and furnishings of important figures from 19th-century America, including George Washington's desk.
