Introduction

Ellis Island is situated in New York Harbor and between 1892 and 1954 it admitted around 12 million third-class passengers and immigrants. It was here that immigrants could undergo legal medical examinations in order to qualify for entry into the United States. Today, the restored Ellis Island has become a museum dedicated to educating visitors about the experiences and history of immigration.
