Introduction

In 1891, the California Institute of Technology was founded. Despite its small size, it ranked fifth in the US university rankings, behind only Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Columbia. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the Times Higher Education Supplement named Caltech the world's top university. Caltech is also recognized as the top in physics, planetary science, and geology in the US. According to the Princeton Review's 2006 rankings, Caltech is the sixth most difficult university to apply to in the US. It is worth noting that the comedy film "Real Genius" and the CBS crime drama "Numb3rs" are loosely based on events at Caltech. In addition, the genius scientists in the TV show "The Big Bang Theory" graduated from Caltech.
