Introduction

The Huntington Library is one of the largest and most complete research libraries in the United States, with a collection of six million historical and literary books and manuscripts that are highly attractive to scholars and the general public alike. Additionally, it is one of America's most important institutions for studying western history, with materials spanning all periods of American western development, including the transcontinental pioneering process, the gold rush, and the development of southern California. The Huntington's permanent works of art are on display in two exhibition halls, and theme exhibitions are also regularly held at the Mary Lou and George Boone exhibition hall. The Huntington also has a bookstore and gift shop, as well as restaurants and tea rooms that offer a variety of dining options, including Chinese meals and tea drinks. Due to its status as a historic building, indoor flash photography and tripods are prohibited, and appointment arrangements must be made for wedding and portrait photography. Only guide or service animals are allowed in the park, and picnics are not permitted in the park. Wheelchair service is available. One-third of The Huntington's annual operating budget comes from enthusiastic contributions from its members, who enjoy privileges such as free admission, gift shop discounts, and invitations to special events.
