Introduction

The Grammy Museum, located in Los Angeles, opened to the public on Saturday, November 29, 2008. The three-story building, which cost about 34 million US dollars, displays various exhibits related to the Grammy Awards, documenting the history of music from creation to production and consumption. Visitors can learn about profiles of up to 160 music genres, view photos and videos of the Grammy Awards over the past 50 years, see costumes and props worn by celebrities at award ceremonies, and learn about the evolution of music through interactive experiences. On the third floor of the museum, visitors can have a "hands-on experience." Large screens and touchscreens display an overview and connections of music categories, and interactive maps allow visitors to learn about music legends in different cities. Short films show the influence of different music styles on popular culture over the past 50 years. The power of music cannot be underestimated— the protest music of the 1960s helped drive the anti-traditional wave of the time, the rock and punk music of the 1970s, the gangsta rap and MTV of the 1980s, and the internet downloads and iPods of the 1990s all influenced popular culture in different eras. The first floor showcases information related to composition and recording studios, with information on producers and music moguls covering its walls. Eight exhibition areas allow visitors to try their hand at rap, choir singing, recording, and DJing. The first floor also displays photos and videos of the Grammy Awards since 1958. Special exhibits and a 200-person theater are located on the second floor, and the museum has arranged over 100 performances and lectures scheduled through 2009.
