Introduction

Canterbury Monastery, located outside the eastern wall of Canterbury, is one of the largest monasteries in England. Established by Augustine, the monastery underwent numerous expansions and fires, and by the 16th century had a vast scale and three churches, with a staggering amount of books in its library. However, during Henry VIII’s Reformation, the monastery was demolished in 1538. Restoration work started in 1844 and it is considered one of the most important surviving Anglo-Saxon ruins in England. However, many tourists often miss this historic monastery.
