Introduction
The University of Southampton is a red brick university in the United Kingdom and a member of the Russell Group of universities. It is also one of the world's top 100 universities. The university began as the Hartley Institution in 1862, became a college of the University of London in 1902, and was granted full university status in 1952. The university is located in the coastal city of Southampton in southern England, about 80 miles from London. With strong teaching capabilities and years of stable development, it has become an international institution with seven campuses and over 20,000 students from more than 100 countries. Its alumni include John Hyde, who was involved in the design of the Intel Pentium processor; Stephen Payne, the chief designer of the world's largest cruise ship, the Queen Mary 2; and Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web, who is currently a professor at the university's School of Computer Science.
