Introduction

The Sheldonian Theatre at the University of Oxford is located on Broad Street in Oxford, England. Built from 1664 to 1668, it was named after the then-principal, Gilbert Sheldon. Designed by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford, the building is mainly used for concerts, lectures, and university ceremonies, rather than theatrical performances. As the main financial supporter of the project, the Sheldonian Theatre is named after Sheldon and remains an important venue for the University of Oxford to this day.
