Introduction

Mary King's Close is an underground street with historical significance located in Edinburgh's Old Town, Scotland. The street originated from a poverty-stricken area in the 16th century, and was closed due to the outbreak of the Black Death in 1645. In 1753, the lower level of the street was used as a foundation, and the Royal Exchange was built on top of it. After more than 250 years, Mary King's Close has been restored to its original historical appearance and has become a popular tourist attraction. In April 2003, Mary King's Close was officially reopened to the public and has since become a unique destination attracting tourists from around the world to admire its distinctive features.
