Introduction

Before the 18th century, the Parliament Square had always been the central area of Edinburgh, primarily occupied by the grand St Giles' Cathedral. The most notable structure among them was the Heart of Midlothian, made up of bricks and stones. As time passed, in the 19th century, the Scottish unicorn statue replaced the 1365 market cross, located on the east side of the square.
